Winifred Lorayne Harris

05-31-1943 - 10-30-2018

Biography: Winifred Lorayne Harris was born in New York, NY to the proud parents of James and Mary Whitaker on May 31st, 1943. She was the youngest of 9 children.

Wini attended Wadleigh Junior High School in New York and graduated in 1962 from George Washington High School where her intellectual and creative fires were stoked.

On June 13th, 1964 Wini was married to the late Robert Harris and from that union she was blessed with the birth of her sons Kirk and Kyle. On December 29th, 1977 Wini was also blessed with the birth of her baby boy Shaun.

Shortly after graduating Wini worked for the Dept. of Social Services until 1971 where she was hired by the NYC Dept. of Corrections. She proudly served for 20 years and throughout her tenure she extended her love to not only her fellow officers, but also compassion and understanding to those unfortunate to be on the other side of the gate. A restless retiree, she worked five more years in a girl’s group home as a crisis manager where she was affectionately known as “Moms”.

Wini was the sort of person who knew no stranger and entertained no adversary. If you needed a plate, she gave you a tray. If you needed a roof, she gave up her room. If you needed a dollar, she would give you five. But the most significant, most precious treasure that she shared was her heart, time and that infectious smile.

In her untimely passing Wini leaves behind her sons Kirk, Kyle and Shaun, her daughter Kisha, grandchildren Kelly, Kyle Jr., Kayla and Krystal, great-grandchildren Dream and Desmond Jr., brothers Aubrey and Van as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, neighbors, DOC family and anyone else who has had the pleasure of her crossing their path throughout her life.

Wini adopted all and placed them underneath one umbrella of Love & Family and her valuable lessons on how to Live, Laugh and Love will continue to keep her spirit alive in each and every one of us.
