Sylvester Hatcher

Sylvester Hatcher

10-27-1939 - 11-01-2018

Biography: Sylvester Hatcher, Jr. was born October 27, 1939 in Macon, GA to the late Sylvester Hatcher, Sr. and Nellie Mae Hatcher. On Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 6:15 A.M. at The Isabella Nursing Home, he was called to his final rest.

Sylvester attended public school in Macon, GA and later relocated to New York at an early age with his mother where he obtained and worked various jobs until he found employment at ISO Insurance Co. During that time he married his wife Betty Jean Bell of Durham, NC on December, 20 1974.

After working at ISO in New York’s Financial District as an insurance adjuster for over 25 years, he was asked to relocate to the company’s Philadelphia office, but he humbly declined. Harlem was his home now and he refused to leave. Throughout his life Sylvester was a man of very few words but he was always willing to help those in need especially his family, his neighbors, the elderly, and his friends. He was the kind of man who honored his word. He said what he meant and always followed through on his promises.

Affectionately known by everyone as “Bruh” or “Brother,” he was a loyal son and nephew to his mother and all of his aunts. At home he was a devoted husband and father, a loving grandfather and perhaps, most notably, a sharp dresser! In his formative years he enjoyed watching live performances with his wife and friends at Harlem’s infamous Apollo Theater. He also loved making homemade ice cream for his sons and delighted in cooking oxtails, pot roast, chicken salad and fresh lemonade for dinner. On the weekends his neighbors could hear him blasting his favorite song, ”Shinning Star” by the Manhattans—and he didn’t care who heard it either. As the years went on he sought work as a residential concierge in New York’s Upper West Side area where he worked for over 20 years until he no longer was able to continue in that capacity.

In 2008 he was diagnosed with Dementia, which later evolved into Alzheimer’s. Before he lost his ability to speak, he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Throughout his final years he was cared for daily by his loving wife until his untimely death.

He was proceeded in death by his father Sylvester Hatcher, Sr., Lizella, GA; his mother Mrs. Nellie Russell, New York, NY; and his sister Juanita Rozier, Macon, GA.

In addition to his wife Betty he leaves to cherish his memory three sons: Joe Williams, Jr., Eric D. Hatcher, and Sylvester Hatcher, III., (Shenekqua;) two grandchildren: Imani Lakiesha Hatcher and Nya Imani Hatcher all of New York, NY; a niece: Candace Yvette Haynes, (Kenny,) Fairview, GA; a nephew: Mikell Rozier (Courtney;) Atlanta, GA; an aunt: Alone Lilienthal, Hillsdale, NJ; and a host of loving cousins, relatives, friends and associates.

The Hatcher Family would like to offer special thanks to the Nursing staff, CNA staff and all other staff members at the Isabella Nursing Home for the outstanding kindness and care that they so tirelessly gave our beloved Sylvester throughout the years of his residence at their facility.

The Family would like to also express our thanks and heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has comforted us, offered their sympathy, prayers and love, visited us, comforted us and provided other acts of sincere kindness. We pray that God will continue to bless and prosper each of you in a very special way.

So sorry for your loss. Many thoughts will go through your mind and heart in the coming days and weeks and may seem overbearing. But remember our creator lost his son to death and he knows how you feel now. You will never be alone. Just as Jehovah God brought his son, Jesus Chirst back to life he promises to do the same for your loved one and billions more in the near future. (Revelation 21:4,5) Remember he loves you. Please accept my deepest condolences.
