Theressa Walker Layne

Theressa Walker Layne

10-22-1924 - 12-02-2018

Biography: Theressa Walker Layne was born on October 22, 1924 in Canton, Ohio to parents Theressa Etna (Nutt) Walker and Dr. John Benjamin Walker. She was an avid singer from an early age, as well as a staunch supporter (and defender) of her older brother John Jr.

Theressa’s love of music led her to attend the Cleveland Institute of Music after she had graduated from Howard University. In 1948, she came to New York to study voice with Mme. Idele Patterson.

While living in New York, she became the lady conductor of the senior choir at the Church on the Hill. This was unique not only because the choir was composed of professional singers, but also because she was one of the first female conductors, which garnered her an article in the Courier
Magazine Edition. It was at this church that Theressa met Cecil Layne, whom she married in 1952.

Theressa worked with her husband in their own photography business. She also had a long illustrious career with the American Society of Civil Engineers until her retirement.

She is preceded in death by: her parents, her brother, John B. Walker Jr.; and her former husband, Cecil Layne. She is survived by her nephews Todd and Brian Walker, numerous cousins, nieces and her entire family and friends of The 10 West Tenants Association.
