Biography: Norman Plowden, better known as “Butch”, was born on November 11, 1950 to the late Thelma Plowden and Earl Cannon in Sumter, South Carolina.
He attended public school in Sumter until his parents relocated to Harlem, New York in 1963 at the age of 14. He continued his education at JHS 243. He went on to Chelsey High School where he graduated in 1971.
Butch joined the Armed Forces and was honorably discharged in 1976. He worked various city jobs until his health began to fail. You could find him selling his wares on Canal Street and other locations. He would also do service at the VA Outreach Center.
As a young man, Butch attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in Sumter, South Carolina. After relocating, he went to various other churches in New York.
On March 3, 2019, Butch who had a quiet spirit was called to his eternal home; his parents: Thelma Plowden, Earl Cannon; brothers: Randolph Earl Plowden, Rudy (Louis) Johnson and Freeman (Perry) Johnson, were there already.
He is survived by: his two children, Tyrone Plowden and Tyquaisa Plowden; two grandchildren, Quashawn Lindsey and Kaidence Almond Lindsey; his only surviving sibling of five, Stevie (Sharon) Plowden; his children's mother, Patricia Lindsey; one uncle, Paul Plowden Jr. of Sumter, South Carolina; two aunts, Mamie James and Helen Dessmond of Sumter, South Carolina and a host of other relatives and friends.
