Biography: Movita Wendy Moore-Walrond affectionately known as “Gran Gran” or “Auntie Mo” was born on August 16, 1940 in the parish of St. Michael, Barbados to Marjorie and George. As a young girl, she enjoyed reading and sketching; she was an avid netball player and she participated in the yearly crop-over (carnival) events.
After finishing primary school, Movita studied to be a seamstress and a cake decorator. During her time as a seamstress she made and designed various wedding dresses for brides and bridal parties; as well as designing and making costumes for Crop-over participants. She also had many individual clients. As a cake decorator, she masterfully created outstanding cakes that were a joy to look at and a pleasure to the pallet.
In the early 1970’s she immigrated to the United States where she professionally pursued home healthcare, where she managed the day to day activities of her clients’ health and well-being. In that capacity she was lauded for her attention to detail and work ethic by her clients and their love ones. Movita continued that career until her retirement in 2004.
Movita was a creative genius who loved to sing, dance, laugh, cook, care for her plants (yes, she had 2 green thumbs) and give selflessly. She encouraged all of us to follow our dreams, reach for the stars and never give up. She would quote scriptures and relate them to everyday life. Her love for music, introduced us to all genres and eras of music. Gran-Gran/Auntie Mo/Mo LOVED everyone; especially, her family and God.
