Biography: Our beloved Katie Nelson, 98 years young was called home on the morning of Wednesday, December 6, 2017.
Katie was born May 25, 1919 in Savannah, Georgia to the late John and Marian Kennedy.  She was the fourth child of seven blessed children (Paul, Josephine, Leroy, Katie, Lottiemae, Dorothy, and Louise) from this union whom her parents dearly loved.
Katie was united in holy matrimony to the late Willie Nelson (known as “Rice”) and was blessed with five (5) children from this union (Willie, Marion, Pauline, James, and Melvin).
Katie attended the public school systems in Newark New Jersey and Savannah, Georgia.  Katie moved to New York City with her family.  She was employed in the domestic field, and later worked 20 years with Bloomingdales where she retired.   Katie professed her life to Jesus Christ and became a member of Reverend Ike’s ministry.  She loved working in the church, singing in the choir, and praising the Lord.   She later became a member of Creflo Dollar’s ministry.
Katie loved to read her bible, morning mediation, praying, watching over and spending time with family, laughing, a little gossip, music, dancing, staying up to date with current events, and always wearing a smile on her face.  Katie was affectionately known as “Broadway Katie” as she spent many years walking along Broadway with her “pulley” (as she called it) shopping for her goods on the Upper Westside in New York City.
Katie lived a fulfilled life with a wealth of knowledge that she enjoyed sharing with us, and always offering words of wisdom.  She lived through the timelines of the Great Depression (1929-1945), WWI & WWII, Racial Segregation, Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968), the gentrification of Harlem, and of the 18 U.S. Presidents she was most proud to see Barack Obama serve for two presidential terms.  So, she enjoyed sharing family stories about our late and new relatives, words of encouragement, and hers and others life experiences during those times in history.
Katie was a spiritual, proud, independent, loving and caring woman who lived her life to the fullest.  She was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother (3 generations), aunt, cousin and friend who was always thinking of others first.   “To know her was to love and cherish her”.  It is definitely without a doubt our matriarch is a “Phenomenal Woman”.   GOD FAVORED OUR QUEEN!!!
Katie leaves to cherish her loving memory, and surviving her children (Willie Nelson, Marion (Teeney) Nelson, and Pauline Nelson), 8 grandchildren (Derand and Shelaine Simpson, Willie Nelson, Phalacia Harley, Frederick Harley, Iovonna Moss, Sherald Townsend, and Shah Jackson), 22 great-grandchildren, her sister (Louise Kennedy), great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Her five (5) siblings, Paul, Josephine, Leroy, Lottiemae and Dorothy (Dicey), and her two sons James and Melvin preceded her in death.
Katie will forever leave a smile on each of our hearts.  Forever Love…
