Biography:
Juanita Wise Edmonds was born the 5th of 6 daughters, to Bycell and Jannie Wise on March 12, 1947 at Lincoln Hospital Bronx, N.Y.
She was educated in the New York City school system. Elementary school, PS 23 in the Bronx, Paul Laurence Dunbar Jr. High School 120 in the Bronx, and Evander Childs High School in the Bronx.
Juanita furthered her education at Barnard Baruch College, receiving a Bachelor's of Science in Business Education achieving Magnum Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. She later attended Lehman College where she received her Master's Degree in Business Education.
Juanita was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance, Skadden Arps Law Firm, where she was a legal secretary, The Board of Education, Brooklyn Adult Learning Center, Interboro Institution of Manhattan, Bramson ORT, Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Manhattan and a substitute teacher in Jonesboro Georgia. Juanita had such a passion for teaching Gregg shorthand, computer software and business keyboarding at Kathrine Gibbs, TCI and Monroe College. Juanita was employed with Sheltering Arms Children’s Services working with recovering addicts, teaching them developmental skills and societal acclimations. Accelerating her talents, she opened her own business school “Classic Enterprises” where she taught keyboarding, computer skills and interview techniques for the business world. Juanita also worked at the Church of Scientology where she was a receptionist and greeter. Juanita also took employment working as a New York City Polls worker. Throughout her employment, she always served as a Mary Kay Consultant, hosting products and selling them as if they were her own.
Juanita found the Lord at a very early age receiving baptism from the Union Baptist Church, under Dr. George H. Simms, Sr. and George H. Simms Jr. (Yaya). Her Parents, Bycell and Jannie opened their doors to fellowship with Jehovah’s Witnesses because of their thirst for biblical knowledge. Studying the word of God was tradition in their household. They would also house the witnesses during watchtower conventions at Yankee Stadium where they would participate and study. Juanita was a part of a social group at the Union Baptist Church called the “Revelations”. She also served on the Sunshine Usher Board under the direction of the late Mary Copeland and the Youth Fellowship Usher Board under the late Grace Samuels. She also belonged to different music ministries such as the Carl B. Taylor Singers with the late Edgar Kendricks, and the Gospel Choir under the direction of the late Melusina Sasporters. Juanita also served as the president of the Lilies of the Valley Ministry, also an active member of the Sister to Sister Ministry and member of the Drama Club Ministry. Juanita loved her church activities and enjoyed trips to Sights and Sounds in Pennsylvania and enjoyed participating in every women's retreat regardless of her physical health condition. She also loved praising God through dance and on special occasions participating in the Praise Dance Ministry under the choreography of her niece, J. Melinda Mickens.
Juanita was a gifted and talented Poet, Writer and Author. Her love for writing is where her faith and religious spirituality intertwined. Writing was an outlet for her. One of her favorite sayings came from the scripture, John 8:36 If the son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Poetry and playwriting were her greatest life joys. Juanita was the author of her own published book called “Don’t Give Yourself Away, But to GOD Only” a book focusing on putting God first in your life and not allowing anyone else to come between you and your personal relationship with God.
In the early 70’s, Juanita met Leonard A. Edmonds Jr. at a birthday party for Goya Gethers. Love at first sight. Juanita and Leonard married March 31, 1977. From this union, three children were born, Leonard (Gus), Sarah and Christina. Juanita loved her family and devoted a lot of time in teaching her children life lessons, how to treat people and most of all, how to keep God first in their lives. Juanita is predeceased by her sisters, Melvina Wise Friend, Deloris Wise Harris and Dorothy Wise Reese Dockery. Juanita leaves to rejoice over her wonderful life, her husband Leonard, her children, Gus, Sarah and Christina. Her sisters, Deacon Thomasina Wise and Deacon Willa Jones (Thomas). Goddaughter and niece J. Melinda Mickens, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, a host of cousins and friends. Her special friend since childhood Rise Carey Ashe and Best Friend and Godmother to her children, Karyn Rollins Jarratta.
