James Leon Rhodes was born on September 25, 1933. He was the youngest of eight children to Hezekiah and Mary Holmes Rhodes. As a young boy he was raised in Neyles, South Carolina. He attained his schooling through the Walterboro school system. On July 15, 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country for over eight years.
He was married to the love of his life, Annie Belle Stephens, on December 5, 1956. After moving to New York City in 1961, he began working with the United States Postal Service until 1989 where he retired with 34 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, one brother and three children, Vanessa, Cheryl and Tony. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Annie, four daughters Angelika Hoffmann of Frankfurt, Germany, Shirley Blanding (Matthew) of New York, NY, Jennifer Glover of Walterboro, SC and Wanda Wright of Hinesville, GA, a nephew who he helped raised Benjamin Seabrook of Walterboro, SC. Three son in laws, Chris Wright, Matthew Blanding and Eric Glover. Twelve grandkids: Anthony, Brittany, Brian, Krishanda, Daniel, Damon, Chanel, Eric Jr., Ke’Shawn, Erica, Matthena and Matthew Jr. and eight great grands. He also leaves two sisters, Mattie Wright of New York and Ellena Kinloch of Philadelphia and a host of family and friends.
