Conwell Livi Butcher also known as “Butch” was born on July 27, 1935 in Smyrna. Delaware. Conwell was the second oldest of six children to Julius E. Butcher and Laura F. Price. After completing his education from William Henry High School in Smyrna, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and honorably discharged on
August 23, 1957. Following his military service, Conwell moved to New York City, where he met and married Mattie Ray. Their 66 year union was blessed with four children: Vanessa, Octavia, Janice and Derek.
Professionally, Butch began his career at Harlem Hospital as a Maintenance Worker, eventually advancing to Mailroom Supervisor. He later jointed the MTA Liberty Line Westchester Bus Service, overseeing bus maintenance until his retirement.
Butch was a man who found immense joy in the company of his loved ones. He took great pride in accomplishments of his family, cherishing the bond he shared with his wife, Matt, whom he lovingly chose for her dedication as a wife, mother and homemaker. Known for his humor and playful nature, Butch often joked to keep Matt on her toes with humor! He fully appreciated her unwavering support and love. He once stated, “he wanted to go before her because he couldn't imagine life without her”.
Butch was a devoted father who delighted in cheering on his children, encouraging them to pursue education as a pathway to independence and resilience. His grandchildren brought him great joy; he was their fun-loving granddad who could act his childlike self around them with love and acceptance. With a spirited personality and known for his love of laughter, his memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
On Sunday, January 19, 2025, Conwell “Butch” departed this life peacefully in Lincoln Hospital during the two weeks he was in the hospital he was surrounded by his loving family. Left behind to carry forth his legacy and fond memories: his wife Mattie R. Butcher; four children: Vanessa Butcher-Johnson, Octavia Butcher-Nicholas, Janice Butcher Dixon and Derek Conwell Butcher; five grandchildren: Christian C. Nicholas, Ariana O. Nicholas, Walter A. Johnson, Deron M. Dixon (Anjelica Dixon) and Devin M. Dixon; three great-grandchildren: Skylar N. Dixon, Jovani C. Dixon and Luna M. Johnson; son-in-law Willie Dixon; honorary daughter Monique “Cookie” Butcher; goddaughter Takira Reed-Dottin; two surviving siblings: his sister Laura E. Waterman and brother Julius R. Butcher (Constance); and a host of nieces,, nephews, cousins and friends.
Conwell was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Laura Butcher; his sisters: Claretta Freeman and Dolores Anderson; and brother Charles Butcher.
