Biography: It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Joe Scriven Jr., who departed this life on October 1, 2024.

Joe Scriven Jr. was born on July 12, 1945, in Charleston, South Carolina to Joe Scriven Sr Sarah Mack. He departed this life on October 1, 2024.

Joe, better known as “Ouch,” attended Simon Elementary School and C.A. Brown High school. He moved to New York City as a young man.

When Joe arrived in New York he tried various jobs and realized very quickly he wanted to be an entrepreneur. Joe owned a convenience store and a laundromat but most importantly he loved playing his numbers and often helped other people with their number “Yep.”  He was also an avid sports enthusiast, with baseball being his favorite. Joe loved to share stories about various places he traveled, but his favorite tales were about growing up in Charleston. He could go on for hours, “help us.”  He loved spilling the tea and lurking on Facebook. Joe was outspoken, never afraid to speak his mind. He was also a bit of a fashion police, always commenting on others' outfits. When it was time to go out, he'd put on his finest attire."

Joe was charismatic and beloved by all. Despite living in New York City for decades, he maintained his Southern values and hospitality. Harlem became his home away from Charleston. Joe cherished spending time with his family and friends. He served as a father figure to many and was always generous and helpful.  He was the epitome of a provider.
