Biography: Willie James McPherson, a lifelong Harlem resident known for his steadfast work ethic, devotion to family, and deep faith, peacefully passed away on October 23, 2024, in his sleep. Born on August 7, 1938, in South Carolina, Willie was the youngest child of Ben McPherson and Nancy Ficklin McPherson, who preceded him in death, along with his older siblings, Ben McPherson Jr. and Naomi Smalls.

He is survived by his beloved sister, Catherine Jones of Garnett, South Carolina. Willie grew up in South Carolina and graduated high school there before moving north in the late 1950s, making Harlem, New York, his home. He spent over 50 years working as a dedicated blue printing worker in Lower Manhattan at Professional Reproductions, providing for his family and establishing a reputation as a dependable and hardworking man who valued loyalty and commitment.

A man of deep faith, Willie loved the Lord with all his heart. He owned numerous Bibles, each worn with use, and he began every day with prayer, seeking guidance and strength from God. His family takes great comfort in knowing that he has a seat in heaven, embraced by the peace he always cherished.

His daughters, whom he affectionately called “my girls,” were his pride and joy: Lisa McPherson of New Jersey; Nancy Thomas, along with her husband, Russell Thomas, of New Jersey; and Cheryl McPherson, also of New Jersey. Willie leaves behind, Derick Rascoe of Dumfries, Virginia, and the mother of his children, Jo-Ann Rascoe. He cherished his grandchildren, Ieshia Thomas, Brittany Thomas, Russell Thomas Jr., James Kirkland, Jordan Jernigan, Christian Alston, Isaiah Kirkland, and Leilani Golden each holding a special place in his heart.

Willie is also remembered fondly by his numerous nieces, especially Jackie and Belly Nathan of Queens, and his dear niece, Brittany Rembert, alongside Nikia Rembert of the Bronx. His amazing nephew, Anthony Jones of South Carolina, and Terrance Rembert of the Bronx were also among his treasured family, as well as little Logan Hayes of the Bronx, whom he lovingly referred to as his “little joy.”

Special thanks are extended to Theresa Gardner, one of Willie’s dearest friends, who ensured he was always well-cared-for right up until his last breath. Her unwavering support and friendship meant the world to him and to those who loved him. Willie was loved by all who knew him, admired for his quiet strength, humble devotion, and the love he poured into his family. His presence will be sorely missed, and his memory cherished. Known for his dapper style, he was never seen without his beloved hats – a small but enduring signature of the man who was, in every way, a steadfast provider, protector, and loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Willie James McPherson will be remembered with love and missed dearly. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the faith he exemplified, and the family he cherished above all else.
