Biography: Avis Maud Drayton was born on August 4, 1929 in Jamaica, West Indies to Edward Parsons and Lennita Savery. God called her home from labor to reward Christmas morning, December 25, 2024.
Avis attended elementary school in St. Anns, Jamaica and high school in Kingston, Jamaica. On September 22, 1964, she received a hairdressing certificate from the Marvel Hairdressing School in Toronto, Canada. Avis relocated to New York where she received her license in hairdressing and cos-metology.
Avis was married to Jasper Drayton, the love of her life, on June 13, 1978 at Mount Olivet Baptist Church by Reverend Lovelle A. Maxwell, who was the officiating of the ceremony at the time. On July 26, 1970, Mrs. Drayton joined Mount Oliver Baptist Church and was baptized by Revered O. Clay Maxwell.
Mrs. Drayton served the Mount Olivet family in many capacities, faithfully and with dedication. She was an active member of the Sunday School, Usher Board, member of the Harvest Homecoming Committee, President of the MOBC Federal Credit Union and treasurer of the MOBC Missionary Union.
She was a financial supporter in the initiation of the Community Meals Program which began in 1997. Avis was a Lifetime Member of the NAACP and a member of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Avis Drayton was a woman who walked in beauty. She exemplified a Proverbs Woman in that she was committed to Christ and His Kingdom. She was loving and caring and thoroughly enjoyed life. May she rest in peace.
