Biography:
Mr. Herbert Owens was born in Reevesville, South Carolina on July 14, 1935 to the late Deacon Edward James Owens and Janie Rivers Owens. He departed this life on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at Northern Manhattan Nursing Home after a prolonged illness.
Herbie, as he was affectionately called, and his family relocated to John’s Island, South Carolina where Herbert joined Ferry Field Baptist Church. He was baptized and became a church usher.
He attended Haut Gap High School where he later became employed as a school bus driver.
Herbie’s hobbies included playing cards, going to the casino and performing as a DJ.
Herbert met the love of his life, Irma Williams, in Charleston, South Carolina and they were united in Holy Matrimony in New York City on June 7, 1958. He was a wonderful husband and the father of four children.
Herbie was a member of the Mariners Temple Baptist Church. He was a faithful member of the usher’s board and the men’s ministry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Fred Owens and Stanley (Robin) Owens.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 67 years, Irma Owens; four children: Cassandra Minson (Leroy) of Charleston, South Carolina, Deborah Owens (Dennis) Parker of Newark, New Jersey, Herbert Owens Jr. of Bronx, New York and Robert Williams (Dinora) of Henderson, North Carolina; his siblings: James Edward Owens (Marie), Thomas Owens, Shirley Commodore (Elijah) all of John’s Island, South Carolina, Ida Owens Coaxum of Charleston, South Carolina and Gracie Owens of Bronx, New York; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
