Today we gather to celebrate the life of Johnny Green — a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and a man whose life was deeply rooted in family, faith, and community.
Johnny was born in Harlem on 115th Street between Lenox Avenue and 7th Avenue to Helen Green along side his siblings, Johnny was lovingly raised by his great-grandparents, James and Alice Penceal, whose guidance, discipline, and faith helped shape the man he became. They brought Johnny and his siblings up in Greater Central Baptist Church, where Johnny remained a faithful member until his passing.
The church was more than a place of worship for Johnny — it was part of his family’s legacy. His great-grandparents were instrumental in helping establish the church, and his great-grandmother, Alice Penceal, was honored as the Mother of the Church until her passing in 2007. That foundation of faith and family remained with Johnny throughout his life.
As a young child, Johnny moved to the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, where he grew up and attended DeWitt Clinton High School. He was one of eight siblings — Veronica, Louis, Sylvia, Majorette, Carol, Johnny, Deborah, and Michael — and shared lifelong bonds with his brothers and sisters.
Johnny went on to build a family of his own and had three daughters Javonne, Darlene, and Laticia with Deborah Gamble he also loved Deborah’s daughter’s Iasia and Erica as his own daughters. His children and family were among the greatest joys of his life. He loved attending family holidays with his children and grandchildren He was blessed with 7 grandchildren — Jazzmin, Janasia, Levonne, Levar, Essence, Katrina, and Marquise — along with five great-grandchildren Olivia, Aiden, Mia, Ryan, and Zion who continue his legacy.
Johnny also enjoyed listening to old school music and could be found with a speaker riding by on his bike. And we can’t forget that he loved to dress well.
Johnny was a hardworking and determined man. As a self-employed entrepreneur, he spent many years always finding ways to provide and stay independent. In the last decade of his life, he worked in building maintenance, continuing to demonstrate his strong work ethic and resilience.
Beyond his work, Johnny will be remembered for the relationships he cherished. He shared a particularly special bond with his nephew Don, a relationship built on love, trust, and closeness. He also shared a longtime loving relationship with Lynette, who remained an important part of his life.
Johnny leaves behind a family who loved him deeply — his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and friends. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, the memories, lessons, laughter, and love he gave will remain in our hearts forever.
