Biography: Calvin Herbert Spence, Sr. was born in NYC ,New York to the proud parents of Herbert and Mary Spence on January 6, 1931. He was the first born of five children. Calvin attended and graduated high school in New York.
He was married for 57 years to Rebecca ''Toni” Spence. Three children came from this union Calvin Jr, Tonya and Grace. He served as a CPL in the United States Marine Corp.
Calvin was a motivated go getter, with a strong work ethic. He was a black owned business man with his own store, Cal's Fruit & Vegetable Market which he started in 1961-1979. A staple in the community on 165th Street and Boston Road. He later went to work for the New York City Department of Sanitation where he then retired from. He loved and cared about other people. He was sociable and giving to others. Calvin and Rebecca were married at Grace Gospel Church. They were long time active members of the church. They served in various groups at the church. Calvin always had a smile on his face while greeting you.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Herbert. His beloved wife, Rebecca and his youngest brother, Dwight Spence. Calvin touched many lives and will be truly missed. He always took pride in his appearance and his car. He leaves behind to mourn: his three children, Calvin Jr ,Tonya and Grace Spence; four grandchildren, Antoinette, Calvin III, Scott and Angelique; one great grandson, Jaxson Spence; his Aunt Betty; his sister, Ethel Terrell; brothers, Bernard and Winston Spence; sister in law, Delores Spence; along with a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
