Biography:

Pecolar Marie Hamlin was called home to be with the Lord on November 21, 2022, at Jacobi Hospital after a lengthy illness

Pecolar was born on January 13, 1940, in Waverly, VA.  She was the daughter of the late Ora Pauline and Willie Alexander Walker.  She graduated high school in Sussex County, VA in 1959. After graduation, she relocated to Richmond, VA where she stayed with her aunt Blanche and worked for a while.  While in Virginia, she felt something was missing so she set her sights on the big city and relocated to New York.  In New York, she reunited with and married the love of her life, Calvin Hamlin on September 28, 1968.  Out of this union was born one son, Craig Hamlin.

Pecolar was an active member of the Good Will Baptist Church for 45 years.  She joined under the leadership of Rev. Rufus Thomas and served under Pastor Booker T. Sears until her health began to fail.  She was a member of the Sanctuary Choir for many years, and she helped other ministries when needed.  She worked on the Women’s ministry and was a faithful Sunday school member.

Pecolar worked as a Ward Secretary for 42 years at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Bronx, NY.  Although she loved her job, she loved helping people more!  Pecolar was caring and loving to all who met her.  She was outspoken, said what she meant and meant what she said. She loved to shop at her favorite stores: Macy’s, JC Penny’s and Bed, Bath & Beyond. She enjoyed decorating her bathroom, talking on the phone and spending time with her three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Shirley, Pauline, Nellie, Theresa, Louise, Grace, and her brother Horace.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 54 years, Deacon Calvin Hamlin, and their son Craig Hamlin, daughter-in-law Qione and three (3) grandchildren: Craig Jr., Casey Marie, and Chase Lee Hamlin.  Sisters: Frances Chatman (Richard), Gloria Gaston (Jerime).  Brothers: Paul Walker (Marian) and Bolling Walker. Sister-in-law Shirley Walker, Brother-in-law Richard Pryor; four (4) special friends: Patricia Champion, Lessie Johnson, Joyce Lyon and Alice Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
