Biography:

Hazel Smith Sinclair, a.k.a “Mama Hazel,” was born on Wednesday, March 28, 1928, in Durham, North Carolina. She moved from North Carolina to New York City to pursue her degree in education, earning her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Childhood Education, and eventually became a teacher.     

Hazel was a dedicated member of Cannan Baptist Church of Christ and an upstanding pillar in her community. She never met a stranger, and her home was always open to many. It was why she was given the title “Mama Hazel.”

She leaves behind the love of her life, two sons, four daughters, a rowboat of grandkids, and a shipload of great-grandkids. A host of friends and family members who loved her and will miss her loving spirit immensely. 

Hazel closed her eyes on Wednesday morning, September 27th, 2023. She went peacefully and was surrounded by family.

For they have heard God’s call,
Now, among heavenly wings
I am seeing such wonderful things;
So please do not cry for me or hurt so that I am gone,
My health and joy are perfectly restored
As I walk in the pure love of our heavenly Lord.
