Biography: On November 15, 2025, Ruth Agnew Young transitioned to be with her Heavenly Father. She was 107 years old. When she passed, she was residing at the Amsterdam Nursing Home after being a long-time resident in the Sugar Hill section of Harlem. Ruth was born to Ada Campbell Agnew and George Agnew in Winston Salem, NC on August 7, 1918. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 siblings (one brother, Alfred, and two sisters, Ada and Thelma), a young child, and her husband, Mr. Young, who died in an accident in North Carolina. Ruth was raised in a Winston Salem orphanage after the death of her parents when she was 3 years old and was educated in the Winston Salem public schools. Ruthy, as she was fondly called by her friends, co-workers, and church members, was employed by Central Manhattan Medical Group as a medical assistant for over 42 years before retiring. She was a faithful and conscientious employee, even going to work the morning after the New York City Blackout. She worked until she was almost 90 years old. Mrs. Young survived two world wars, World War I ending in 1918 and World War II ending in 1945. During her lifetime, she saw the effects of the Spanish Flu and COVID-19 pandemics. She was also not a stranger to the effects of the Great Depression. For many years, she was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Ruthy was a warm and caring person, and she developed many lasting friendships. Because she was without a family, her friends became her family. She spiritually adopted friends and labeled them as if they were members of her family. She lovingly called George Powell her ‘son’ or ‘godson’ and Yvonne Holder-Clare her ‘daughter’ or ‘goddaughter’. They were friends for more than 50 years. James Sutton was adopted as her ‘nephew’. For more than 10 years, Mary Holmes was a health aide, and Ruthy considered Mary as her ‘sister’. Other friends had similar titles. Since Ruthy was a kind, thoughtful and sharing person, she was surrounded by loving friends. Ruthy will be missed by her adopted family, friends, and community.
