Biography: Betty Jones was born on July 24, 1943. She is one of nine children born to Moses Bailey and Heppie Jenkins in Charleston, SC where she grew up in a loving and faithful home.
Upon graduating from high school, she relocated to New York. After studying cosmetology and receiving her license, Betty later pursued a career at New York Telephone Company, now Verizon, where she
ultimately served as supervisor until her retirement in 1999. After retirement, Betty volunteered with Experien Corps as a teacher helping second graders to read.
At an early age Betty joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, singing in the choir. She later joined Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in 1990 and was a faithful and active member serving on various boards and committees as well as being a deaconess.
Betty was called home to be with the Lord on August 9th, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Moses Bailey and Heppie Jenkins; her brothers, Moses Bailey, Jr., Herman Bailey, and Herbert Bailey; and her sisters, Ella Mae Murray and Edith Green.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Nyisha Whitaker; son-in-law, Maurice Sean Whitaker; her grandchildren, Jessica Whitaker and Joshua Whitaker; her sisters Deloris (Theodore) Flowers, Mary Ellen Bailey, and Marva (Allen) Johnson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
