Joe “Willie” Jenkins was born on February 12, 1935 to the late Matthew and Carrie Jenkins on St. Helena Island, South
Carolina. He was preceded in death by his son Bernard Jenkins.
Joe was affectionately known as Wille and Uncle Bill by family and friends. At an early he was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at Ebenezer Baptist Church in St. Helena Island, South Carolina.
He received his education in the South Carolina Public School System. Willie enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from September 1953 to August 1956 where he received an honorable discharge. After he was discharged he moved to New York City and worked until he retired in 2001.
In 1964 he met and married Naomi Clark who remained by his side until the very end.
In 1982 Bro. Jenkins joined Walker Memorial Baptist Church where he was a member of the Hospitality Ministry, Male chorus and Sanctuary Choir.
On Thursday May 30th, 2019, Joe Jenkins was called from labor to a well deserved rest at the Harlem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Joe Jenkins leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Naomi “Gertrude” Jenkins; his daughters, Ivy L. Jenkins of Fort Washington, Maryland and Deirdre C. Jenkins of Atlanta, Georgia. One Granddaughter, Symphony Jenkins, two great-grandchildren, Kayden and Maliyah Jenkins all from Atlanta Georgia. One sister Sarah Ann Pendergrass (Roger) of Fort Mill, South Carolina, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
