Evelyn Boone Cohen

01-20-1939 - 08-11-2019

Biography: Evelyn Boone-Cohen was born in Norfolk, Virginia to the parents of Leon Boone and Verleen (Mamie) Dozier on
Friday, January 20, 1939.

As a teenager Evelyn, her mother, and younger brother Leon Boone (who proceeded her in death) moved to Harlem to live with Aunt Bessie and Uncle Fred. At age 16, she graduated from high school and later attended the College of New Rochelle.

When Evelyn was 18 years old, she married William Henry Cohen (aka Tony Valentine). Out of this union, Stacey Cohen was born in 1962. Evelyn worked for the City of New York at Bellevue Hospital as a Hospital Care Investigator Supervisor and dressed down to the “T” while doing it.  She retired after 26 years of wonderful service.  She referred to herself as a fox and was never caught slipping.  Evelyn was also known as “Shaky” to her friends on 143rd St., and was also a great cook that made Sunday dinner and desserts for her family.  She lived in Canaan Houses for well over 40 years.

Evelyn had a most loving spirit, who valued the closeness of family.  She was a mother and grandmother to many and had warm heart.  She was also well known for telling people the truth even when it was uncomfortable for them, and had no problem with doing so, but through it all, she said it out of concern and love.

Evelyn was called home peacefully on August 11, 2019.  She leaves to mourn, her loving daughter Stacey Echo Cohen.  Her beautiful grandchildren, Uriah and his wife Latasha, Shamicka, Khari, Kiyon, and Kalani. Her great-grandchildren, DaRonn, Sirus, Dorien, Jordyn, and Paige.  Her cousins Teddy, Kelly and his wife Deborah, Victor and his wife Dietris, Dean, Lil’ Kelly and his family, Tariq, Keeshwana and her family as well as Teleigha and her family.  Her spiritual sister, Joyce Garrow, her niece and nephew Nellie and her daughter Latoya, Isiah and his wife Lisa and their children, Terrell, Isiah Jr. and Joshua and a host of wonderful lifelong friends.
