Biography: Mary Esther Jones - Fogg was born in Henderson, NC on September 19, 1938 to the late Charlie Solomon and Elizabeth Hawkins. She slipped away from us at her home on Saturday, March 7, 2020. Two brothers, Charlie Solomon and William Lewis Solomon and one sister Jessie Bell Smalls, preceded her in death.
Mary elementary education was in the Vance County School System. She graduated from Hawkins High School, Warrenton, NC in June 1956.
She met a young man from her hometown by the name of John Earl Jones, Sr. They were married in September 1956. To this union one son John Earl Jones, Jr. was born. After a brief time they were divorced and Mary relocated to New York.
Mary had a sweet smile and she was full of beauty, dignity and grace. Those characteristics landed her a modeling job in New York and she was able to travel in the U.S. and Abroad. She was also photographed in JET Magazine.
She married Harold Fogg in 1969. She was a faithful and devoted wife until his death in July 1995.
Mary joined the United Grand Chapter Eastern Star in 1968. She was a member in all of the Houses for over 40 years. Holding such positions as ‘Past Matron’ and ‘Past Worthy Grand Matron’ and treasurer for Almas Court – Daughters of Sphinx.
Mary worked at Nina Sportswear Inc., in Passaic, NJ, as a Bookkeeper for over 25 year until her retirement in 2003.
Upon entering retirement and wanting to stay active and help others, Mary joined the Rockaway Senior Center. She was recognized and received an Award by the Center for her Volunteer Service. She was very dedicated to the Center never wanting to miss a day. It was there that she met her very special friend Harry Connor. Over the years they enjoyed travelling and participating in the activities at the Center. With their shared love for cooking, they enjoyed hosting Christmas Dinner for both families. She loved and cared for Harry’s family just like her own. Mary had such a sweet, kind, giving spirit. She loved and cared for
everyone she met. Her famous fried chicken, chocolate cake; sweet potato pie will definitely be missed.
Mary accepted Christ at a young age was baptized and joined Phipps Chapel Baptist Church in Henderson, NC. When she relocated to New York she joined Little Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Bronx, NY where she served as trustee, choir member and usher. In 1993 Mary joined Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church, New York City, where she served as a pastor’s aid member and trustee faithfully and tirelessly until her untimely death under the leadership of Rev. Walter Martin.
She is remembered with love by; her son, John Earl Jones, Jr. (Hermanise Theresa), two grandsons; Charles Vashon Jones, John Earl Jones III, one step-grandson; Rani Holmes (Kathleen), two step-great grandsons; Joshua Holmes, Daniel Holmes, one brother; John Solomon, one sister; Annie Pearl Harris (Melvin), two aunts; Zella Hicks, Vergie Alston, two god-daughters; Dekesha Crudup, Natalie Paschall, a special friend; Harry Connor and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
