Biography: Annie Mae Jones Penny was born January 3, 1937 in Georgetown, South Carolina, daughter of Harvey and Dora Jones. Annie Mae was the oldest of nine children. She attended Howard High School in Georgetown, South Carolina.
On December 15, 1952, she married Melvin Penny. This union was blessed with the births of four children: Evelyn, Quint, Melvina and Larla. In 1962, she moved to Brooklyn, New York where she was employed as a domestic worker. Everyone loved Annie Mae (affectionately called “Mommae”). Mommae loved to whistle on her way home from work and at home as well. Mommae loved watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, scary movies and basketball. Mommae had a great love for cooking. Everything she cooked was good. She loved seafood especially crabs. Not surprisingly, Mommae loved Easter and Thanksgiving. On these days not only did she enjoy cooking for her family, but also her neighbors and friends.
As the matriarch, Mommae was always well informed on everyone within her family. She was a very devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. After a brief period of illness, Mommae was called home to be with the Lord on March 20, 2020 while a resident at the Triboro Center Rehab Nursing Home. While many hearts are saddened by her loss, our lives are forever richer by all those who knew and loved her. Annie Mae was preceded in death by her parent, Harvey and Dora Jones; her husband Melvin and daughter, Melvina.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her three children: Evelyn (Vernon), Quint and Larla; three brothers, Rezell Jones (Barbara ) of the Bronx, NY, George Jones (Barbara) of Georgetown, SC and Donald Smalls of the Bronx, NY’ two sisters, Gertude Jones and Maddie Smalls both of the Bronx, NY; beloved grandchildren: Andre Pennye of the Bronx, NY, Christopher Pennye (Nikki) of the Bronx, NY, Jamel Pennye (Doreen) of the Bronx, NY, Jameel Riddick of Manhattan, NY, Rashad Pyatt of the Bronx, NY and Monique Carlton of Highpoint, North Carolina; great-grands: Jamel Jr., Ashley, Christopher Jr., Marcus, Jayvon, Sharhonda, Taraji, Chase, Scarlett, Rashad Jr., Amarri, Jeremiah and Aziyah; along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Also a special friend Cowboy.
God saw that Mommae’s body was tired so He did what He thought was best. He put his arms around her and whispered come home and rest.
Rest Peace
