Biography: Annie Doris Farmer was born in Wilson, NC on June 12th, 1939 to Nathaniel Farmer (deceased) and Lucille Mitchell (deceased). She was affectionately nicknamed “bay-sis” by her family.
During the great migration where African Americans moved towards the north to find better opportunities, Annie made Harlem, New York City her home in the mid 1950’s where she met and married Joseph Nelson on February 14, 1959. This union was blessed with three girls, Monique, Brigitte, and Fifi Simone Nelson.
Annie worked hard to obtain her college degree as she started a teaching career at Mabel Dean Bacon High School in New York City. She later went on to be a payroll secretary for the New York City Department of Education.
Her home was often a refuge for the neighborhood kids and people often turned to her for a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. To know Annie was to love her. She was an avid international traveler, a connoisseur of good food, elegant and stylish clothing, and skillful in home decorations that reflected high standards of class.
She attended Canaan Baptist Church where she served as the Trustee and on the Usher Board. Her hobbies included playing Bridge, dancing, reading, shopping, and she adored raising her 3 children and 2 grandchildren . Over the years Annie made countless friends who all loved and adored her dearly.
She has gone to heaven to join her Daughter Monique Nelson and Grandson Dereck Ramon Nelson.
Annie leaves behind to honor her life, her two daughters Rev. Dr. Brigitte Nelson and FiFi Simone Nelson, 4 grandchildren Triessy Simone Nelson; Annie Tynese Nelson; Quame Thomas; and Omar Thomas; 5 great-grandchildren Monique Nelson-James; Maliky Dereck Nelson; Dereck Jr. Nelson; Joseph Nelson the 2nd; and Zaire Sekou Nelson Thomas; one great-great granddaughter Brie’l James; 5 sisters; 2 brothers and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Gone in the physical form, Annie will forever live in our hearts and memories and will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
