Doris Althea Brown-Watson, 88 transitioned to her eternal rest on Thursday September 16, 2021, at Calvary Hospital Bronx N.Y. Doris was born on February 20, 1933, in Charleston SC to the proud parents of Jermiah Brown and Victoria Grant Brown. She was the sixth child born to this union.
Doris attended elementary and high school in Charleston, and in 1951 graduated from J.C. Burke Industrial School. Always seeking adventure, Doris traveled to New York to visit her best friend, Mell Jenkins, unaware that New York would eventually become her new home.Shortly after relocating to New York, she obtained employment at Doubleday Book Publishing where she worked in the bindery department.
In 1954, she met her soul mate, Eugene Watson, and in 1955 the two were married. To this union the couple were blessed with two daughters, Antoinette, and Faith.
Doris eventually left Doubleday Book Publishing and acquired employment with the United States Postal Service where she retired in 1999, after 30 years of employment. In her leisure activities, she was a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star – Antioch Chapter Nbr. 44 in which she served in multiple capacities as well as the 1985 Worthy Matron. Additionally, Doris was an avid volunteer with Montefiore Hospital Center (Bronx NY), and the American Cancer Society, a certified foster parent, and a spirit filled Missionary at her home church, Shiloh Baptist Church New York, NY where she was a faithful member for over 20 years.
Doris is survived by her daughters, Antoinette Watson-Fuller, Bronx NY, Faith Watson, Indian Land SC, Caroline Watson, Bronx NY, granddaughters, Ciara Moore, Cliffside Park NJ, Dominique Whisnant, Brooklyn NY, Kaitlyn and Avigail Palmer, Bronx NY, great-granddaughter, Madison Primo, sister in-laws Francis McDaniel, Bette Dow and Eloise Smith, nieces Veronica, Victoria, Juliette Carrie, Linda, Beverly, Patricia, Angela, Claretha, Wendy Ann, Shelia, Kathy, Stacey (Melvin), Abigail, Juliette and Donna Michelle, nephews Romero, David Sr., William (Carolyn), Carroll (Sandra), Ray, Curtis, and Ruben Jr., special friends Evelyn Culbert, Lonise West, Betty Womack, Juanita Brown and a host of great nieces, great nephews, family members and friends.
Doris was predeceased by her father Jermiah, mother Victoria, brothers’ Jerry and Rufus Brown, sisters’ Rosabell Wayman, Margaret Chisolm, Vida Kearse, nephews Robert and Sanbreal Wayman, John Ford, Eric Kearse and Rufus Brown Jr., nieces Vonderline Brown, Carlisa Jackson, former husband and friend, Eugene Watson, special friend Ms. Barbara Frierson, and longtime companion Roland Goode.
