Biography:

Celebration of Life – Sallie B. Harrison
Sallie B. Harrison was born on March 24, 1925 in Montgomery Alabama to the late Ned and Estelle Hughs. Sallie was the 3rd eldest of 10 children whom all preceded her in death except her younger brother Edward Lee. Sallie was raised in a God-fearing home and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a very young age while her entire family attended the Old Elam Baptist Church where they all served in several capacities.

Sallie was reared up in the Alabama Public School System and upon completion of Booker T. Washington Middle School, Sallie and her siblings had to contribute to the family by working out in the fields on their parents’ land. After working for many years on her parent’s land, Sallie was given an opportunity to travel to New York City with a family as their Nanny. Sallie was excited to go on this journey hoping to achieve a better life.

While in New York in the mid 1950’s Sallie met the late Fleming C. Harrison and on September 27th, 1958 they united in holy matrimony. To this union one child (the apple of her eye) Ahmad, affectionately known as Trent was born. Sallie was excited to have a family of her own to care for. However, after a few years of being a stay-at-home wife and mother, Sallie was ready to go back to work. Sallie spent over three decades as a caregiver to three generations in one family until her oldest grandchild Jerrell was born.

Sallie loved meeting the needs of others. She enjoyed cooking (Alabama Style) and providing meals to many in her neighborhood. Sallie would always make time to talk and listen to her family and friends. She was a bonus mom to many in the Millbrook Houses. Sallie was also a strong advocate for tenant’s rights in her building complex.

Most of all, Sallie loved God, her family and instilled in her son strong values that has served him well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Sallie leaves to cherish her memories, her son Ahmad, daughter in love Octavia, two grandsons Jerrell and Malachi all of New York City, one brother Edward Lee Hughs of Cincinnati Ohio, three close friends, Peggy Hatwood and Debra Parker of New York City, Mammie Smalls of Myrtle Beach South Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whose lives were deeply touched by Sallie.
